Catch Basin, Storm Drain, By Any Other Name

This is the beginning of the DEQ's Fact Sheet on Catch Basins

The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide basic
Storm Regen Making Catch Basin Servicing Easy & Quick
information on catch basin design, effectiveness
and sediment sampling.

A catch basin is an inlet to a storm drain system
that typically includes a grate where stormwater
enters, and a sump to capture sediment, debris
and associated pollutants.

Catch basins are designed specifically for
capturing and conveying stormwater. It is
important to note, that although catch basins
often have sumps for the collection of sediment,
the actual design specifications and placement of
catch basins are not based on expected sediment
load.
